The video of the block production is great. Thank you for this.
Question: I assume the flat surfaces of the boards inside the molds are surfaced with teflon, but what material is the white blocking such as makes the voids?
Tom,
The white solids are teflon. The plywood casing material has a smooth surface on one side, but I was so caught up in the event, I didn't get that detail. I'll see if I can find out.
... and, did you see the photos in the North Brookfield Gallery? The link is in the video caption.
Solid teflon! That's got to be ... not very inexpensive.
But I know nothing about the price of teflon.
The plywood you see is made for the concrete form industry and has a resin on both side to protect the plywood and make the surface slick. The inserts are a teflon composite material that can be machined and is very slick. After it is machined to a taper on all 4 sides it will slips out of the setting concrete without hanging up.
Yes I have to sell a small farm every time we buy the blanks for the inserts but it is the only material we have found that will capture all of Wright's detail.
