FSC receives $400,000 grant for restoration

Florida Southern College was recently granted $400,000 from the state of Florida’s Division of Historical Resources in an effort to preserve the legendary architecture work of Frank Lloyd Wright. 

 

Included in this project is a major grant to restore the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel back to the original state it was in back in 1941.

First New Frank Lloyd Wright Home in 66 Years Opens at Lakeland College

  He's been gone for more than half a century, but the works of master architect Frank Lloyd Wright live on. And, for the first time in 66 years, a new home by Wright is being built. It's being unveiled tonight as a portal for tourists visiting the largest collection of Wright's works anywhere.

LAKELAND | Florida Southern College’s Frank Lloyd Wright-designed campus has been designated a National Historic Landmark, it was announced Tuesday.


The Florida Southern College Historic District, known as Wright’s “Child of the Sun” Campus, is the world’s largest single-site collection of his work.

a new Frank Lloyd Wright house at FSC

 

LAKELAND – For the first time since the 1960s, a Frank Lloyd Wright house has been built for its original client on its original site at Florida Southern College.

 

The 1,700-square-foot house is the only one ever built from this particular Wright design. The Usonian House, as it is known, will be used as the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, according to a release. It was originally designed in 1939 and the blue prints were locked away until recently. It was designed as faculty housing at the college.

 

The home opens on Nov. 1 with an event at the college. View the photos.

 

The two-bedroom home was built with 1,978 textile blocks in 47 different shapes and 5,000 colored glass inserts.

A bronze statue of the famed architect will be unveiled at the Friday event. Florida Southern College boasts the largest collection of Wright’s architecture in the world. The new Usonian house is the 13th Wright-designed building on campus. Wright died in 195

LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Florida Southern College has one more Frank Lloyd Wright building to add to its unique collection.

The Usonian House is near completion, and the college gave a sneak peak of it on Wednesday.
LAKELAND -- Florida Southern College is adding a brand new welcome center featuring a design by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright drew up the plans in 1941 but they were locked away until now.
 

The Usonian House was built using Wright’s unique “textile block” construction and his trademark colored glass and is an example of Wright’s vision for American suburban living. This is the first time this particular design of a Wright home has ever been built.

"The concrete mix design was revised from original specs - heavy on local materials - to increase durability while maintaining the same finish as vintage textile blocks, which were molded from a sandstone and coquina mixture. Project principals experimented with more than 50 mixes for the new blocks, creating hundreds of samples before arriving at the final composition ... "
